About

Recommended for:
April holidays | July holidays | Natural world | Self-drive | Short break | Spring | Summer

From Art-Nouveau Ålesund's pretty peninsula setting, this road trip brings you deep in Norway's western fjords via the vertigo-inducing switchbacks of the Eagle Road. You'll arrive at Geirangerfjord's waterside idyll for three days of independent exploration. Perhaps contemplate the scenery on gentle fjord-side rambles, head into the hills on criss-crossing hiking trails or hit the waters to cruise out among waterfall-dappled cliffs. It's all complemented by soaks in the hotel's outdoor pool and included gourmet dinners that showcase the best of the region's gastronomic offerings.

Day by day itinerary

Day 1
UK/Ålesund

Fly to Ålesund and check in to the Hotel Brosundet, whose antique-beamed rooms are framed by views of the pretty waterfront. Spend the afternoon looking around the town's gorgeous Art-Nouveau centre. Entirely rebuilt following the great fire of 1904, it's a vision of pastel-coloured beauty. Your hotel is in the centre of town, directly on the water, so you're well placed for exploring on foot.

Stay: Hotel Brosundet, Alesund (Superior)

Day 2
Ålesund

You’ll have another day to explore the colourful streets of Ålesund, perhaps visiting one of several fascinating museums, including the Art Museum KUBE, Ålesunds Museum or the Fisheries Museum. There’s even an open-air collection of 55 historic houses and boats, including replicas of Viking Ships, at Sunnmøre Museum & Borgundkaupangen. Then, perhaps walk the 418 steps up Mt. Aksla to take it all in from up above, along with sweeping views of the surrounding Sunnmøre Alps.

Stay: Hotel Brosundet, Alesund (Superior)

Day 3
Ålesund to Geirangerfjord

After collecting your hire car, you'll head out on a scenic drive past towering cliffs and powerful waterfalls to Geirangerfjord. It's well worth taking the longer route via the Eidsdal-Linge Ferry and the epic hairpin bends of Trollstigen, a series of switchbacks that bring you over high mountain passes. Then, once arrived, you'll check into the Hotel Union – a grand, 100-year-old dame that's been delightfully updated for the 21st century. This evening, perhaps take a dip in the hotel's outdoor therapy pool, with views over the fjord and mountains.

Stay: Hotel Union, Geiranger

Days 4-5
Geirangerfjord

Today and tomorrow are free for sightseeing – perhaps take a drive along the famous Eagle's Road, visit the Geiranger Sky Walk or head to Mt. Dalsnibba, the region's highest peak. You might consider taking the Geiranger-Hellesylt Ferry for a cruise on the fjord and onto the Loen Skylift, climbing to a spectacular height of 1011m. Of course, there's also the chance to head out on foot, with a number of well-marked trails bringing you among bucolic farmlands and more dramatic outlooks. Each day you'll return to included gourmet dinners at your hotel, featuring traditional Norwegian fare.

Stay: Hotel Union, Geiranger

Day 6
Depart for UK

After breakfast this morning, drive back to Ålesund, mapping lush-green valleys en route before dropping your hire car off at the airport in time for your return flight home.
