Location

Positioned high on Punta Ala's sloping cliffs, Cala del Porto has privileged views out over the marina towards the island of Elba in the distance. It's a favourite among Italy's well-heeled, with the white masts of luxury yachts dotting blue waters and, with larger vessels, bluer skies. Head out to explore on boat cruises and esplanade walks or stay active with a round of golf on courses that rank among the country's finest. It's all immaculately presented in true gourmet fashion. There's also a wide selection of Italian wines to choose from, including locally produced Tuscan varieties. The breakfasts are especially good, with a range of Italian favourites on offer – think cold cuts and fine cheeses – alongside fresh fruits and juices. Don't miss out on the range of sweet options and, in particular, the chocolate torte.

Punta Ala concerns itself entirely with luxurious relaxation and Cala del Porto is no different. Unwind at the hotel's spa, which offers a range of massages and treatments along with a state-of-the-art fitness centre, a solarium and a Turkish bath. Alternatively, simply make use of the figure-of-eight swimming pool, the Jacuzzi or sauna, while taking in yet more of those gorgeous views. There are also two bars – one indoor and one poolside. Considering all this, you'll have to remind yourself to find time for the private beach.
